Riazul Haque Sagar, Rangpur: The water of the Teesta river has suddenly received rain due to the upstream flood and Saturday night's rain.
The water has increased since Saturday night and increased by 5 centimeters at the Teesta Barrage point, the country's largest irrigation project, by 9 am on Sunday. Dalia Water Development Board sources said that there was intermittent rain along with gusty winds in the Teesta basin on Saturday night. Along with the flood coming from upstream, the water of the Teesta has increased slightly.
However, the water of the Teesta is still flowing 140 centimeters below the danger level at the barrage point. Meanwhile, the sudden increase in Teesta water during the dry season has brought joy among farmers. Farmers were irrigating their cropland at a high cost. The increase in water will reduce the cost of that irrigation to a great extent.
Abdul Gafur and Liaqat Ali, farmers upstream of the Teesta Barrage, said that the upstream flood has increased due to the stormy rain on Saturday night. This has increased the water level at the Teesta barrage point. Even on Saturday afternoon, where the Teesta barrage and its surrounding areas were turned into a dusty sandbank, the Teesta was full of water on Sunday morning.
Farmers in the char areas are very happy about this. Confirming the increase in water level, Amitabh Chowdhury, executive engineer of the Dalia Teesta Barrage Project of the Water Development Board, said that the water level in the Teesta has increased slightly due to the inflow from the upstream. However, the water is still flowing far below the danger level at the barrage point.
